All you need to know about Skype
Who, or what, is Skype?
To understand Skype, you need to go back a little bit and understand what it is. Skype is a VoIP application, so to understand it, you first need to understand VoIP. Which leads to the question: what’s VoIP? In fact, it’s an acronym, standing for “Voice Over Internet Protocol”. Or, to normal people like you and me, phone calls over your internet connection, not over a normal phone connection.
Skype is the leading VoIP application out there. And it’s also the name of the company who makes that software, hence the “who or what” in this section’s title. It’s a cool, easy to use program that lets you make calls over the internet, but also does much more, as you can chat with text through it as well.
Skype is not just limited to your PC. Skype made the jump to mobile phones as well, culminating in the launch of its very own Skype phone, the 3 Skypephone, which gives you all the benefits of a great mobile phone, combined with the ultra-cheapness of Skype’s internet-based phone calls.
In essence then, Skype is the king of VoIP; the emperor of internet telephone calls! (And to avoid any confusion, it’s also the name of the company who make the program; so Skype, the program, is made by Skype, the company, who also make the Skype Phone).
