Mobile broadband demand 'to increase'
Posted: 1 February 2010
The demand for mobile broadband services is set to largely rise this year, according to an industry expert.
Dr Peter Couch, head of strategy development at Arqiva a communications infrastructure and media services company said "we expect considerable increase in demand for new mobile broadband services over the new year and beyond".
But he admitted that the 2.6 gigahertz and 800 megahertz spectrums, frequencies used for wireless telecommunications, would be vital if there is to be a big rise.
Mr Couch, speaking at the Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar: Progress of the Digital Switchover and Next Steps for the Digital Dividend Review, noted that a big characteristic of the 800 megahertz spectrum "is its considerable reach and building-capable penetration".
Forecasts made earlier this month state that mobile broadband-enabled consumer electronics will reach 58 million by 2014, a 55-fold increase since 2008.
This includes mobile gaming devices as well as ebook readers and digital cameras.
