O2 unveils Palm Pre launch date

Following weeks of speculation, O2 has announced the UK launch date for one of its most eagerly-anticipated new smartphones.

The network confirmed today (September 24th) that the Palm Pre would be available on a network-exclusive basis across Britain from October 16th.

Previously, the operator explained the device would be released across Europe "in time for the winter holidays", despite the fact it has been available in the US for some time.

This led to speculation across the internet about how soon people could expect the Web OS-enabled model.

However, chief executive officer of O2's parent company Telefonica Ronan Dunne said the confirmation now means the firm has established itself as the "home of the smartphone" - no doubt referring to some of its other exclusives such as the Apple iPhone 3G.

"With the addition of the excellent Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio, we will continue to offer our customers the widest range of the very best devices on the market today," he concluded.
