Money-savers 'boosting Skype popularity'
Posted: 6 July 2009
The number of people now using Skype shows the system has continued to succeed during a time of recession, it has been suggested.
A spokesman for TeleGeography, which analyses current trends in the mobile telecommunications sector, said the internet-based calling application could continue to grow as it has done of late.
Stephan Beckert, director of research at the organisation, explained that although it was unclear exactly how Skype's figures have been affected by the economic slowdown, the high usage levels speak for themselves.
"The volumes are obviously huge, and growing at about 50 per cent annually. It remains to be seen what impact the recession or the release of clients for mobile devices will have on Skype's traffic," he added.
Available on devices like the Apple iPhone 3G, BlackBerry and 3 Mobile's INQ1, the application provides a cheap option for landlines and mobiles, as well as free calls to other Skype users.
