Mobile broadband changes 'need to serve web demand'

Government plans to boost internet and mobile broadband services need to be backed by affordable and manageable systems, it has been advised.

A spokesman for ISPreview.co.uk, which specialises in news, reviews and discussion of the latest web developments, said the Business and Enterprise Committee (BEC) inquiry on UK connection speeds could prove pointless.

Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief at the site, explained it is essential for any changes being made to the current infrastructure take into account the needs of modern internet users.

"There's little point in making 2 Mbps available to everybody if it ends up being an expensive and highly restrictive mess of a service that is incapable of keeping up with modern demands, such as for online video services," he added.

Following the publication of the Digital Britain report, the BEC inquiry has been launched ascertain whether universal access targets for fixed line and mobile broadband speeds can be achieved and if they are ambitious enough.
