Skype popularity 'could increase'

Voice calling using mobile phone applications such as Skype could increase in the future, it has been advised.

A spokesman for Analysys Mason, a strategy consulting advice firm, said the use of such internet-based technologies is relatively low in the UK across some sectors, but it was likely this would change.

Rupert Wood, principal analyst at the firm, explained this was because currently there are not many operators promoting packages and those that do, are not providing it as a standalone option.

"Until - and we do expect this to happen - operators start offering [VoIP] as a primary line service then people will probably be largely uninterested," he said.

Consumers can get access to Skype as a downloadable facility on their laptops and PCs for use with mobile broadband, while those with handsets from BlackBerry and Apple may be able to access it via a dedicated application.

A number of devices in the 3 Mobile line up also support the web-based voice calling service.
