Web users 'think Blu-ray is a type of broadband'

Mobile broadband users are confused about the terminology being used to categorise services, according to a new study.

The survey, put together by Virgin Media, found many people in the UK have misunderstandings about internet security, data allowances and speed descriptions.

It was also noted 18 per cent of web users are unaware of what broadband actually is and seven per cent believe Blu-ray is a term used to describe a type of connection.

ADSL meant nothing to 40 per cent of those asked and 45 per cent could not explain what a dongle is.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said although it is a positive thing to see so many people in the UK embracing the web, more needs to be done to educate them.

"We want to help people understand the language of the internet, by cutting through the jargon, using simple and honest terms that everyone can understand," he added.

The network provider recently announced it would broadcast the third season of Dexter in high definition on its IPTV offering.

How savvy are you with web jargon?
