Security measures for mobile phone payments introduced
Posted: 1 September 2009
Security measures have been introduced to minimise the potential for criminals to abuse the latest mobile phone systems.
According to the Home Office, the technology being trialled in some parts of the UK that enables users to pay for products and services by waving their handset over a sensor should not place early adopters under any more risk than is proportionate.
Therefore, it has created a process whereby buyers have to provide a pin code if they want to use this contactless method to purchase items over £10.
They will also be encouraged to add their information to the UK's National Mobile Phone Register.
In addition, phones, payment functions and Sim cards will be disabled if any of the former go missing or are stolen.
"This technology is an exciting new development but we must continue to work together to reduce any new opportunities for criminals to profit from mobile theft," remarked Home Office minister Alan Johnson.
Other wave and pay systems in use throughout certain areas of the country include Oyster and sQuidcard.
