Opera spokesman comments on popularity

Following a recent report detailing the popularity of the Opera Mini mobile web browsing software, a spokesman for the company has suggested this could well continue.

Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive officer of the software provider, explained in an interview with GigaOM that there were many things the firm had in the pipeline that would help it remain in a strong position.

He said Opera Mini had been boosted by the launch of additional facilities like the Turbo feature and the system had now been able to reach out into other areas such as online application downloads.

"These stores can be a distribution channel for Opera. In addition to that, we are enabling stores by providing Opera with Widgets as a way to run apps and sometimes even helping make the stores," Mr Tetzchner concluded.

His comments follow a report on August 25th that noted the Opera Mini browser had been downloaded by over 25 million users via the GetJar website alone.
