Mobile phone developments 'have boosted fitness options'

One expert has commented further on a report which suggested more people may be getting fit using their mobile phones.

According to Richard Sharp, founder of online electronics news and reviews resource gadgetsandgizmos.org, the number of new developments seen in recent years has helped stimulate this rise.

He explained a selection of handsets have boosted the accessibility of fitness measuring devices with various technologies - like mapping, GPS and 3G - while also making such facilities cheap to operate.

"They provide all of the analysis and features of dedicated fitness hardware but [have] the added bonus of being available in just one small device - the smartphone," he added.

According to ABI Research, the future of fitness applications on mobile phones looks particularly bright, although this may be at the expense of the market for more dedicated training equipment, which continues to suffer because of the recession.

Smartphone health widgets like MotionX-GPS contributed to the 1.2 million downloads seen this year, the study advised.
