Mobile broadband to receive technology boost?
Posted: 17 November 2009
The future of mobile broadband could be boosted by the introduction of new technology under review by one industry watchdog this week.
According to Ofcom, a report has been issued that will look at the functionality and practicality of utilising unwanted radio waves to improve web services across the UK.
Although mobile broadband packages can serve as a useful tool for those who live in areas unsupported by fixed line offerings, the group explained the plans could enhance access for consumers in remote rural regions.
Professor William Webb, head of research and development at Ofcom, said that there are a number of wireless applications that could benefit from the technology, but there was much work to be done in proving this.
"The purpose of this discussion document is to further the thinking that is taking place around the world on geolocation and speed the development of possible solutions," he added.
It was also announced this week that Ofcom had published its report on media ownership regulations that could impact the internet, mobile phone, television and radio services available to the public.
Is your mobile broadband fast enough?
