Budget contracts and 'great value phones'

With a wide selection of devices now available on affordable tariffs, some people may find the monthly option is a more convenient way of staying in touch than prepay.

However, this does not mean these shoppers should be consigned to using older, less technologically-advanced devices, as a recent blog article for moby1 could be seen to illustrate.

The site noted that the Nokia 2720 was one example of a low-cost device that was able to be just as trendy as its more expensive siblings, while also bringing 3G support to the masses.

"Watch out for some carriers who are sure to offer this free of charge," the piece advised. "This is a great value phone for first timers."

Another low-cost device that balances features with design is the LG Cookie, which this year was revealed by its manufacturer to have shifted over five million units - a figure it predicted would double by the end of 2009.

Dr Skott Ahn, president and chief executive officer of the group, said: "Achieving five million units in sales in only nine months is proof that we're on track with our goal to make Cookie a phone that's loved by everyone."
