Orange: Mobile broadband subscriptions up by 504%

Mobile giant Orange has reported an "explosion" in mobile broadband data usage, with advances in mobile internet technology seeing figures leaping to record highs.

According to the latest Orange Digital Media Index, subscriptions to the provider's dongle-based mobile internet service were up by 504 per cent, while dongle data usage increased by 4,125 per cent.

Handset data usage also jumped by 108 per cent, contributing to an overall average of 386,000 gigabytes of transferred data per month.

Mobile access of social networking sites and Orange's entertainment services also saw a huge upsurge, suggesting that people are looking to get the maximum value out of their online mobile services despite the economic conditions.

Paul Jevons, director of products, portals and services for Orange, said: "Customers are repeatedly enjoying the intuitive and seamless mobile internet experience to access a greater quantity and quality of content that is designed specifically for the mobile portal."

Orange is not only targeting leisure users with its online services, having recently offered business customers up to 50 per cent off mobile broadband packages.
