Samsung Mobile wins advertising prize

SamsungSamsung Mobile has been announced as the winner of the Silver Award in the Cyber Lions category of the Cannes Lions Awards 2009.

The honour is given for innovative new advertisements and was bestowed upon the South Korean manufacturer for a recent clip to promote the Omnia handset.

Younghee Lee, vice-president of global marketing at Samsung's mobile communications division, said the video - which saw someone unboxing the new device - had proved very popular online.

"[We] planned a consumer-oriented, holistic brand campaign with primary focus on buzz marketing including online viral marketing and it contributed very much to Omnia's big success," he added.

The company recently launched three new Omnia handsets and was also named as the winner of the Best Manufacturer award at the Mobile Industry Awards 2009 in London.

Samsung beat a number of its rivals including HTC, LG, Nokia, Research In Motion and Sony Ericsson to take the title.
