LG shows off innovative GD900 Crystal

The CommunicAsia 2009 event in Singapore this week provided LG the opportunity to show off an innovative new handset with a transparent keypad.

In addition to the GM730, a Windows-based smartphone which debuted at the event, the South Korean manufacturer showcased the LG GD900 Crystal - which was originally unveiled in February.

The device - which the firm claims is the first of its kind - utilises touch-sensitive technology to offer a see-through keyboard that works in the same way as a laptop trackpad.

LG said this means it can recognise handwriting and offers a new way to navigate the phone's interface with a feature called Gesture Command.

"Users can switch instantly among applications by simply drawing one of 12 easy symbols on the Crystal touchpad," it explained.

Dr Skott Ahn, president and chief executive of LG's mobile business noted both the GM730 and GD900 Crystal were examples of "top-of-the-line phones […] based on insights from consumers".
