Broadband 'is something people need'

With more web providers offering a diverse range of services - like mobile broadband - one expert says it is clear the internet is now a necessity to many.

A spokesman for broadband.co.uk, an independent site which offers help and advice regarding online products, said for many having a connection at home was already essential.

Edd Dawson, managing director of the organisation, cited recent figures which showed 84 per cent of people believe having access to the web is just as vital as having water on tap.

"I'm old enough to remember before the internet and before mobile phones," he added. "But now all those things in my life - and just about everyone I know's life - are totally necessary. It's something they need."

Mr Dawson's comments follow an article published by the Time this week in which prime minister Gordon Brown said the internet was now as essential to modern Brits as having a gas and water supply.
