O2 makes announcement on Palm Pre launch

O2 has announced it is to become the exclusive distributor of the Palm Pre in a number of European markets.

The network's parent company Telefonica revealed a partnership with the smartphone manufacturer that will see the device launched in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Germany.

More continental locations are expected to follow and a preliminary release time prior to the winter holiday season has been advised - although consumers have been given the option to register online for any updates.

Matthew Key, chairman and chief executive officer of Telefonica Europe, commented that O2 was "fast becoming the home of the smartphone", having built an "extensive portfolio" of handsets that include the Apple iPhone 3G.

"Our customers will be the first outside of North America to experience one of the most successful mobile devices of the year," he added.

The Palm Pre is equipped with a host of smartphone options including 3G connectivity and also boasts a full qwerty keyboard.

However, perhaps one of the most alluring aspects of the device is the new webOS software that was designed for use with the gadget, which the manufacturer notes will help users coordinate their contacts and calendars.
