Nokia updates the 5800

Nokia has announced an updated version of one of its models that focuses on the latest mapping and GPS technologies.

Following the launch of the 5800 XpressMusic earlier this year, a device that was clearly targeted at those to whom audio was a key function, the Finnish firm has unveiled details of a new handset.

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition is the same touchscreen-enabled model that existed before, apart from the fact it has been fitted with voice-guided licensed software, fast access to Ovi Maps and improved zooming.

Also onboard is the user interface that was previously available on the XpressMusic version of the phone, as well as the familiar 3.2-inch front panel.

The Nokia Press Bulletin Board added that the revised version of Ovi Maps features a number of improvements, including "high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for over 200 cities [and] terrain maps".

It added "weather service, premium travel and events content and traffic and safety warnings" were another welcome inclusion.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was one of the first to feature the manufacturer's Comes With Music service.

How valuable are GPS options?
