Nokia showcases latest NFC device

NokiaNokia has boosted its Near Field Communications (NFC) technology with the announcement of a new handset.

The company has been developing the NFC system for some time, but took the opportunity at the opening keynote of the third annual WIMA conference to showcase what it can do.

With the Nokia 6216 Classic - the Finnish manufacturer's first SIM-based mobile phone to be completely compatible with the remote service - it is claimed users will be able to share content, make payments and utilise mobile ticketing.

Jeremy Belostock, head of NFC at the firm, said there were a number of facilities that consumers could expect when models like the 6216 begin to roll out.

"With the Nokia 6216 classic in your pocket and the ticketing applications on the SIM, you can replace the multitude of cards in your wallet," he explained.

O2 is one network that has also been involved in mobile ticketing in the past - including for West End shows like Lord of the Rings.
