Sony Ericsson's announcement that it is to offer a new music download service has been followed with some good news for the company.
A survey conducted by TNS has revealed that an estimated 2.1 billion tracks could be downloaded between its PlayNow portal and that of rival Nokia by UK mobile phones customers.
The report showed this figure, in particular when compared with the 1.5 billion legal music downloads in Britain during 2007, could "mean big business for mobile operators", cellular-news comments.
Amy Cashman, managing director of TNS Technology, said that it was clear that their was a great deal of potential in the music download for mobile phones market that was as yet untapped.
"No doubt the industry will be watching closely to see if Nokia and Sony Ericsson will be able to move the goalposts substantially forward," she added.
Nokia announced earlier this month that its Comes With Music service would be kicked off as part of a deal with the Carphonewarehouse, where music lovers will be able to but a special edition Nokia 5310 XpressMusic.
