Buying parking tickets with mobile phones

Mobile phones could soon be used to buy Pay and Display parking tickets under a new initiative launched by the government.

It is hoped that the new scheme will reduce the number of parking fines that are imposed on consumers as well as making life easier for the transport industry, South Yorkshire newspaper the Star reports.

The publication adds it will also mean excuses such as having to go and get change for the Pay and Display machines will no longer be acceptable to the transport authorities.

Citing a report made to a scrutiny committee meeting recently, the newspaper states that one officer said the technology is available and should be an effective solution.

"There are several providers of the mobile phone technology and this payment method would largely resolve the problem faced by drivers who have insufficient coins," the officer said.

Already moves are being made to introduce more mobile technology to support other ticketing such as concerts and a number of similar events.
