GPS features 'generating interest in smartphones'

The number of smartphones that are now available is starting to peak interest in the high-tech capabilities of mobile phones, according to one expert.

A spokesman for ABI Research said this week there were a number of features that were now common in a number of handsets and made people realise exactly what they can get from different models.

Dominique Bonte, research director for telematics and navigation at the group, said users can tag locations on pictures and link them to computer applications.

"People are starting to become more aware that their phones allow GPS and you can do a lot more with your phone than call or send a text," he said.

However, he added that for such features to achieve true mass market appeal, it was likely such services would need to be around for at least "a few years".

A recent study from ABI Research found GPS-enabled smartphones with touch screen interfaces were creating more interest in handset-based navigation.
