It is reported that Nokia could be about to boost its range of mobile phones with a number of handsets that use Linux.
According to the Pocket-lint.co.uk consumer electronics website, the Finnish manufacturer has given its approval to the Linux operating system by stating its intent to use it on a number of web-enabled handsets.
The site reports that a spokesman for Nokia told the Reuters news agency its range of internet tablets already used Linux, but that the technology would increasingly be present on its phones.
Kari Tuutti, vice president of communications for Nokia, said: "We will expand that [internet tablet] range, and we believe that the role of Linux will grow".
Pocket-lint.co.uk adds that Nokia's Symbian S60 operating system "dominates the phone market", but notes that a number of operators and manufacturers, including Vodafone and Samsung Electronics, are moving towards Linux.
