Microsoft could further its expansion into the world of mobile phones by offering a handset that could rival the iPhone.
According to reports, the company has not ruled out the possibility of developing a handset that would build on the Microsoft Zune range of mp3 players by including phone technology.
Gameshout.com states that as well as offering mobile phones, Microsoft has said it would be "not unreasonable" to suggest a music service of its own - similar to Apple's iTunes - was in its future.
The site notes that a Zune phone has been the "topic of speculation for months" and that consumer demand for a single multimedia device could push Microsoft forward.
"To date, the focus of Microsoft's mobile phone business has been providing its Windows Mobile software
but the company said an integrated business model of making both device and software could make sense," the site adds.
Apple announced this week that at an upcoming conference in June it would unveil new iPhone software as well as a revised version of its Leopard platform.
