Users of Windows-enabled mobile phones could soon have access to new services that will allow them to watch video and chat with friends.
Reuters reports today that Microsoft has boosted its Windows Live Messenger service with a new Messenger TV program which will allow the popular MSN chat facility to run alongside a video player.
It is noted the video player and chat service, which could soon be available on smartphone handsets such as BlackBerry's new Bold model, will feature clips of the type visitors to MSN Video may already be familiar with.
Content from distributors such as Sony BMG is expected to be included and John Mangelaars, vice-president of consumer and online services for Microsoft, said the firm hopes to convert the viewing of online video to a more social pastime.
"Online video has exploded in popularity over the last year, but to date it has been something people watch on their own - Messenger TV is set to change all that," he said.
This week saw figures from comScore reveal that online video content had grown by around 64 per cent for March 2008 on the previous year.
