A new study has predicted the number of GPS-enabled mobile phones will grow significantly over the new few years, it has emerged.
According to vnunet.com, manufacturers will be shipping anything up to 550 million handsets equipped with the satellite-based services by the year 2012 - thanks to their current popularity with consumers.
In a statement accompanying the study, which was put together by ABI Research, it was noted that the popularity of social networking and geo-tagging has pushed the demand for GPS functionality.
Commenting on the news, ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte said that it was clear that GPS was set to become a "standard feature" on a number of handsets.
"GSM feature phones are next on the agenda to be equipped with GPS."
Earlier this week, Nokia announced that it would increase its GPS offerings with a new integrated internet and mobile mapping service.
