With a growing number of networks increasing their mobile broadband offerings, one expert has noted that it is best to shop around.
A spokesman for PlusNet, a group which provides its own broadband services, said that consumers need to work out how much they use the web and look for a package that suits their needs.
Neil Armstrong, products and marketing director at the firm, said their own recent research suggests people are not doing enough homework in advance of buying their internet or mobile broadband package and that this can be important.
"Our research shows that many customers don't understand how much bandwidth they use, what activities contribute to heavy usage amounts or what exceeding download limits actually means for their bill," he said.
He added that some providers will charge for exceeding download limits and that for this reason it is essential to find the right package in advance.
YouGov research found that eight out of ten broadband and mobile broadband users do not know their monthly usage allowance.
