Mobile phone popularity 'shows no sign of slowing'

Consumers can't get enough of new mobile phones and will continue to look for the next new handset, one expert has suggested.

According to a spokesman for CommSec, an Australian company which provides information and data on shares and the business sector, gadgets are something which people love and mobile phones fit squarely into this category.

Chief equities economist at the firm, Craig James, cited recent research that showed Australian consumers were among the many people who continually sought-out new mobile phones and said this trend showed "no signs of slowing".

"Australians love tech goods like mobile phones, computers and iPods and the record-breaking run of mobile phone sales is confirmation of that fact," he said.

However, it was noted that although many people want to be the first to try out the latest innovations, the telecommunications industry would need to continue to push the boundaries "to keep momentum going".

One such innovation came from Sony Ericsson, which unveiled details of a new handset that will be equipped with an eight-megapixel camera - Motorola is also expected to follow suit with a similarly-equipped model.
