With some mobile phones offering new motion control features, one expert notes that this has already revolutionised the console gaming industry.
A spokesman for Stuff.tv, a review-based website which offers all the latest news on gadgets and mobile phones, said products such as the Nintendo Wii have shown there is a strong market for motion control gaming.
Joe Minihane, online news editor for the site, said a number of technological advancements were likely to emerge in gaming in the near future, but added that a controller of some sort would always be required.
"Gesture control will be a big thing," he said. "There's always going to be a niche for people who want to sit down on a sofa and hold a controller in their hand."
The iPhone 3G is one handset that offers such features and a number of games are available in which gesture control is paramount to the gameplay.
One of these is Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, available from Apple's App store for £5.99, which Pocket Gamer recently said was "fully motion-controlled".
