Consumers with mobile phones are set to receive better protection against expensive subscriptions for ringtones and other accessories.
The Guardian reports that the European commission has warned websites and companies misleading consumers into entering contracts with costly consequences that they will face tough penalties.
Meglena Kuneva, EU consumer commissioner, said that for too long unscrupulous companies had made money from people who were unaware of the amount they would have to spend by signing to mobile phones products and services.
"Far too many people are falling victim to costly surprises from mysterious charges, fees and ringtone subscriptions they learn about for the first time when they see their mobile bill," she said.
It is thought that such traders will now be tracked down and subjected to EU-wide enforcement if they are found to be operating in an unfair manner.
Earlier this week, the newspaper reported that the EC was also set to begin regulating the cost of European Union roaming fees.
