A student who designed concept mobile phones for one of the UK's biggest networks has been given an award for his designs, it has emerged.

Chi Shing Lo of De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, who had previously been given the opportunity to come up with concepts for Orangemobile phones, took the first prize in the annual D&AD Student Awards.

The awards, currently in their 30th year, honour innovative advertising and design and showcase talent from colleges and universities across the world, Cellular-News reports.

The design, which used a hole in the middle to act as the cameraphone's viewfinder, charging point and keypad hinge, was praised for its qualities by DMU subject leader for product, furniture and industrial design, Michael Marsden.

"Winning an award at this level is significant, especially as Shing is only a second year student and much of the competition will be final year students with far more design experience," Mr Marsden said.

Last month, Computerworld.com advised that a number of new concept mobile phones were in the works including a shape-shifting model from Nokia named the Morph.
