New handset from 3 targets the Facebook generation

A new handset that caused 50,000 people to register their interest before an official announcement was made has been launched by 3 Mobile.

The INQ1, which the network claims is the most advanced mobile phone to have been released with social networking in mind, is exclusive to 3 and goes on sale today.

UK users can expect special access to Facebook as well as Skype calling services and easy connection to Windows Live Messenger and online music service Last.fm.

Kevin Russell, chief executive of 3 in the UK, said that the INQ1 was an affordable handset that is both great to look at and comes with a host of features which will be of particular interest to some.

"With this phone you can keep track of your Facebook friends all day, every day as part of your ordinary phone usage," he added.

The phone features integrated RSS feeds, free Skype-to-Skype calling and a 3.2 megapixel camera - from which Facebook pictures can be easily uploaded.

A number of other networks have embraced social networking, with some offering tariffs that provide free access to them on certain contracts.
