The growth of mobile broadband internet has been widely reported recently and one expert has suggested children could benefit from this boost in services.
A spokeswoman for the National Union of Teachers said this week that it is important for young children to be introduced to the educational benefits that modern technology provides.
Christine Blower, acting general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said however that it was equally important to ensure children were accessing the right type of things.
"[Technology] should be introduced for a purpose and made fun, but also not allowing endless exposure to computers," she said.
With services such as mobile broadband on the rise, more children could find they now have access to the web and a recent Ofcom study found social networking to be increasingly popular with young children.
The study revealed that 49 per cent of children between the ages of eight and 17 have an online profile on sites such as Bebo, MySpace and Facebook.
