New mobile charger offers less waste

O2A new universal charger from Telephonica O2 has been launched, which could interest those with environmental concerns.

The UK mobile operator behind the O2 brand has launched a new energy-efficient system which works on a number of mobile phones and reduces consumption levels by up to 70 per cent.

It is estimated by the network that as much as £30 million is wasted each year in the UK, thanks to phones being unnecessarily left on charge - and, according to the O2 chief executive Ronan Dunne, this is something people want to see change.

"People are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact products are having on the environment and with mobile the single biggest impact is the energy used in charging," he said.

He added that consumer concern over the environment was growing and as such it is important to come up with simple and effective ways to reduce waste.

The O2 network also announced this week that it would bringing the new BlackBerry Curve 8900 to its UK customers.
