T Mobile could be about to go head-to-head with Apple by offering an open platform for mobile phone applications.
The mocoNews website reports the network could be looking to scrap its current way of offering multimedia features to customers in favour of a service that works in the same way as Apple's App Store.
It is though the new T Mobile store would allow developers to submit applications to the network and - following approval - will be made available to users based on their popularity.
"But the more interesting aspect is that this will apply to all the carrier's platforms from upcoming Android to Java to Sidekick and Windows Mobile," the article adds.
Since the report, it is noted that T Mobile's director of mobile applications and partner programs, Venetia Espinoza, has confirmed that the network is working towards "an open wireless services platform" and that an announcement could be made "in the coming weeks".
The Apple App Store recently removed an application that was retailing for $999.99 (£520) and according to the Los Angeles Times did very little apart from suggest the wealth of the iPhone user that downloaded it.
