A recent trial of the O2 Wallet has found that 78 per cent of people wish to be able to use contactless services on their handsets.
Of those taking part in the study, nine in ten said that they were happy using the Near Field Communications (NFC) on their mobiles.
A similar number stated that if the technology was made widely available on mobile phones, whether or not a handset supported it could influence whether or not they purchased it.
Use of Oyster through mobiles was of particular interest to test subjects while having the Barclaycard Visa payWave feature was also a popular option with two-thirds saying they would like to have it.
Claire Maslen, head of NFC, commented: "Imagine going out for the night and only taking your mobile phone with you."
She added that the trial demonstrated that people wanted the convenience and practicality of having as features such as those found in the O2 Wallet.
Mobile wallets are currently available from companies such as Paybox and Redknee but even greater flexibility would be allowed consumers if the feature could be integrated into more widely used phones such as Nokia and Sony Ericcsons handsets.
