The new Skypephone from 3 - the S2 - is an improvement on the original and scrubs up well, according to a new review.

Looks-wise, the S2 has a black and metallic colour scheme although "it is still plastic", T3 magazine said.

The homescreen is easy to navigate and calling other Skype account holders is easy, the gadget website noted.

The battery life lasted a whole day for voice calls but the review said it drained much quicker when logged on to the internet.

However, getting on the web is "speedy" and gives the phone a rounded selection of features that could make it a satisfactory competitor against other Skype handsets on the market.

It added: "3 has come out fighting with this Skype baby and we're impressed."

The camera is equipped with 3.2 megapixels and images are shown on a 2.2-inch screen.

According to reports, the S2 costs around £70.
