The demand for mobile broadband services is set to largely rise this year, according to an industry expert.

Dr Peter Couch, head of strategy development at Arqiva – a communications infrastructure and media services company – said "we expect considerable increase in demand for new mobile broadband services over the new year and beyond".

But he admitted that the 2.6 gigahertz and 800 megahertz spectrums, frequencies used for wireless telecommunications, would be vital if there is to be a big rise.

Mr Couch, speaking at the Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar: Progress of the Digital Switchover and Next Steps for the Digital Dividend Review, noted that a big characteris ...

Mobile phone industry 'could exploit cloud-based services'

The number of cloud-based mobile phone applications could increase, according to an industry expert.

Steve Reynolds, chairman of the Mobile Data Association (MDA), a not-for-profit industry association, said it is a "natural progression to migrate to cloud computing".

He said the mobile phone industry is in a position to "exploit, utilise and deploy cloud-based services probably more than the server and infrastructure side of the industry on the basis that [the mobile phone] is a connective device".

Mr Reynolds added that customers only have to pay for what storage they use thanks to cloud computing so it has a unique selling point.

"If I've got my iPhone with me it is much quicker to check a website on my phone than it is to go and get a laptop and boot it up," he added.

However, Mr Dawson concluded that it was unlikely trad ...
