Every now and then, an alliance is formed, that is completely unexpected, but sets the world alight, shaking it to its foundations. And that requires a longer description here than normal, simply because it's so good. That's what has happened, here, as Sony Ericsson have teamed up with Windows Mobile, to produce what can only be described as the ultimate smartphone.

Say hello to the frankly mind-blowing Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.

Arc Slider

Cast in a metal body, the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia features a unique 'arc-slider' design, which sounds more complicated than it is. Basically, the back of the phone, where the QWERTY keyboard is, is curved, so that when you slide open the phone, it changes the angle you view it at, as well, tilting the screen to make it easier to view. That's the first time that's been seen on a phone, and it makes the screen, SO much easier to view!

Whether you got the slide open or closed, you have a huge number of options to control the phone. There's the touchscreen. There's the QWERTY keyboard. But perhaps coolest of all is the fact that nestling amongst the navigation keys, near the screen, is a little black pad. Believe it or not, that's actually an optical mouse pad, making the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia work JUST like a mini-laptop!

Software Breakthrough

Once you've stopped admiring the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia's hardware (which will take you some time), you get the chance to revel in how good the software is on it. You're basically getting a brand new version of Windows Mobile, version 6.1, which in itself would be stunning. But it's been combined with Sony Ericsson's own 'panel navigation' interface (as you can see in the photo of the phone), which gives each of the home screens, be it music-related, or calendar, a panel, that you just press on to switch to. It is stupendously easy and nice to use!

Also making its debut in their smartphone portfolio is the motion sensor that rotates the screen and interface to automatically align itself with whichever angle you're holding the phone at. That is an unbelievably good addition, and it only serves to make the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia more tempting!

Insane Features

But, of course, no smartphone would be complete without a whole grab-bag of features... Well, the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia has more features than just about any other phone we've ever seen! So, you get a 3 megapixel camera, you get GPS and sat-nav (something you WILL find useful), full Office functionality, email, full internet, instant messaging... well, you can see it's an expansive list by anyone's reckoning! There is literally a feature for everyone on the phone, and if it doesn't benefit you, we can only assume you have turned it on yet!

In a nutshell, that is the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia. How excited are we by it? Well, put it this way. This could very well be the single best phone we've EVER seen!
