Android security flaw being fixed as we speak

Google is currently working on fixing the Android OS flaws that were highlighted last Friday.

After a team of German researchers published a paper about the Android OS security flaws, which highlighted the fact that some authentication codes were being sent unencrypted in a plain-text format over open Wi-Fi connections, Google has had no choice but to take action.

Google has released an official statement addressing the issues of the operating systems security flaws and how they are planning to solve it as quickly as possible> IT says: “Today we’re starting to roll out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts.”

The fix will not require Android users to take any action and is expected to initiate within the next few days, globally.

Google Android to take over mobile world (cue evil laughter)

Google Android - OS of the yearIt seems like only yesterday that we thought Steve Jobs owned the future of the mobile world and beyond. Anti-Appleites lobbied against his walled garden approach and despaired at his unstoppable tech machine. That was until that little green robot came along, of course. Then the anti-Apple world, plus me, rejoiced in their new hero. And now it’s predicted Google’s Android is on course to become the leading mobile operating system (OS) in the world by 2014, according to industry analysts.

A report by Gartner claims that the OS will be the second most used platform in 2011, before becoming THE most used in 2014.

It goes on to say that Nokia’s main OS Symbian will also dominate the market, with the two platforms set to account for 59.8 per cent of the market within four years. (more…)

Mid-Range Android Shootout – LG Optimus GT540 vs. HTC Wildfire

I was pootling about earlier, as one does, and I saw a review of the LG Optimus GT540. And I realised that I’ve not actually spoken much about that particular phone. Well, since today’s a slow news day, it’s time to rectify that, except what the hell, let’s do it as a comparison-type review thing.

So, ’tis entry level Android phone shootout time, because I’ve decided to pit the LG Optimus GT540 against the HTC Wildfire. You may be wondering why I’ve picked those two, but the logic’s very simple. Y’see, they’re both Android phones, they’re both entry-level handsets, and depending on what transpires, it’ll either be a nice, fair, balanced review, or one of the phones (I’m not saying which) will almightily curbstomp the other. New App Store guidelines – preemptive blow against Windows Phone 7?

TechnicalMarkus Posted on: September 9th, 2010

You’ve possibly read, today, that Apple have loosened up their restrictions on the App Store a bit, and made their guidelines available, presumably in an effort to get developers back on their side (or snag new developers). These new rules (although still a bit puritanical, in my view… more on that in a minute) do seem a bit less likely to see apps banned for what ya might call hidden reasons.

However, PocketNow makes a interesting point; the new rules seem like they would benefit games developers most of all, particularly the bit about them relaxing the restrictions on what dev tools they use to make apps (y’know, like the inclusion of the Unreal Engine). But, if that’s true, why the big push on gaming, all of a sudden? (more…)

The new version of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 4.1 has been released but does it fix the proximity sensor issue?

Initial reports indicate that the update has largely solved the proximity issue with just a few iPhone owners complaining that their phone is still dropping calls or putting them on mute. (more…)

Google Music to launch by Christmas – maybe

Mobileshop-News Posted on: September 9th, 2010

Google is hoping to have Google Music live by Christmas, according to internet reports.

However, such an early release date may be outside of the realms of possibility since it’s claimed Google is yet to sign a deal with any of the major labels to license tracks. The cloud-based service had previously been given a 2011 release date, which may be a bit more realistic. (more…)
