The Nokia N900 will soon get access to the brand new MeeGo OS.
It’s being reported that Nokia are going to let N900 users try out their brand new smartphone OS, by “dual-booting” between it and Maemo, which the N900 currently uses. (more…)
Okay, the video you’re about to see is either a crucial breakthrough in the field of mobile security, or, if you’ve watched The Terminator and The Matrix, the beginning of the end for humanity, as the machines begin their ruthless, bloodthirsty uprising. When we’re all plugged into the overlord, computing pi all day, remember that the downfall of man began here, today, with a Nokia N900 that can track your face…
Oh, alright, I’ll be serious. The idea behind the tech, developed at the University of Manchester, is to make phones more secure (and less reliant on passwords) by using face and voice print analysis. In other words, the phone looks at you, and if it ain’t your face, it presumably locks itself. (more…)
Mobile gaming’s becoming one of the big buzzwords as we roll on through 2010, especially with the upcoming release of Windows Phone 7 (y’know, ‘cos it’s got Xbox Live built in, a fact I still get excited about). However, today, I saw something that makes mobile gaming even cooler: the Game Gripper…
Yup, that’s one being used on the Nokia N900, to play Super Mario Something (not sure which one, but it’s got Yoshi in it), and from what I can gather (y’know, by watching the video) it seems to work by having the buttons on the Gripper press down on the keys on the N900′s keypad, to control the action. (more…)
I had an entirely different blog post planned, to the one I’m about to do now, and there is a very, very good reason for that. Y’see, I’ve spoken a few times in the past about something called MeeGo, and it occurred to me that, er, I’ve never really gone into any great depth about what MeeGo actually is.
Well, alright, I sort of have, but saying “it’s Maemo but newer” is probably less than useful. So, let’s go into a bit more depth, shall we: what exactly is MeeGo?
Simple, it’s Maemo but newer.
Ha, sorry, couldn’t resist. (more…)
Now then, here’s a thing: y’know how I’ve gone on about Snapdragon processors like there’s no tomorrow? And y’know how the Snapdragon has competition in the shape of both the Hummingbird chip and the Apple A4 processor? Well, there’s one hyper-advanced mobile chipset I’ve not spoken about so far, which may well have the potential to completely muller all 3 of those processor.
It’s called the Moorestown, it’s made by Intel, and I mention it now because Carrypad, the lucky bleeders, have got their hands on an Aava prototype running the new Moorestown processor. And it’s very possible that this may be the most important phone of the year, because it’s also running the pre-alpha version of MeeGo. (more…)
Now then, I’ve spoken about the Nokia N8 before, but the phone that’s catching my eye is what might be the Nokia N9. You know, the phone that looks like what you’d get if you sellotaped a QWERTY keyboard onto the Nokia N8. This one:
Right, first things first. The reason I said it might be the N9 is because it has Symbian on. And Nokia said no more Nseries phone would uses Symbian. So, either they lied, or it is the Nokia N9 and it’ll get MeeGo before launch, or it’ll keep Symbian and not be an Nseries phone. Got that? Good. (more…)
I did a round-up of everything we know about the Nokia N8 yesterday, and you may remember that although I reckon it’s a good phone, I don’t get the same emotional reaction to it that I do to, say, an HTC phone. The same, however, cannot be said about the rumours I’m hearing, regarding the Nokia N9, because it looks, if I may coin a phrase, absolutely mint.
And thanks to the new teaser images from Negri Electronics, I’m getting even more excited, for a couple of key reasons. First, it seems like it has a 4 inch screen. Second (and this might not be the case), it looks as though the front camera has a flash on it. I have never seen that before, and therefore, excitement ensues. (more…)
Right, folks, I’ve been meaning to do this sort of roundup review type thing, of all the news we’ve heard about the Nokia N8, for a few days, now. But you know how it is, you get doing something, then something exciting happens, and you go “ooh, shiny” (or something similar), and blog about that instead. Well, you do if you’re a blogger with an attention span of about 3 nanoseconds, or is that just me?
Anyway, since the Nokia N8 will be the last Symbian flagship phone Nokia make (according to CNet), since they’re switching to MeeGo for future top-enders, now’s the perfect time to have a bit more in-depth look at it. Y’know, to see if it is a fitting high-end swansong for Symbian. (more…)
Woohoo! At long last, about chuffin’ time, and so on, and so on. As other manufacturers upped their camera resolutions to 8, then 12, megapixels, Nokia steadfastly, er, didn’t. Look at some o their flagship phones: the Nokia N900? 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 Mini? 5 megapixels. The Nokia N86? Oh, alright, that one was 8 megapixels, but the point still stands, ‘cos it was their only 8MP camera phone.
Not any more, though, according to our own news section…
Y’see, they’ve just announced the Nokia N8, and it is (after we’ve all patiently waited for it to happen) Nokia’s first 12MP camera phone. (more…)
Nokia has reported a 57 per cent increase in smartphone sales compared to a year ago. (more…)
