LG Optimus 4X HD unveiled – like an HTC One X, but Korean

I’ve gone on at unbelievable length (seriously, I never shut up about the subject), about how I love massive, powerful, big-screened superphones. The most recent example is the Samsung Galaxy S3, which fits those criteria perfectly, and before that, there was the HTC One X, a phone so magnificently impressive that I bought one.

And now, according to Engadget, LG have thrown their hat into the “massive, powerful, big-screened superphone” arena, with the LG Optimus 4X HD, a phone that can best be described as “what an HTC One X would be like if the Koreans made it”.

Yes, the specs really are that similar; this is like the One X’s brother from another mother… (more…)

Quad-core LG coming, to take on HTC and Samsung?

Now then, I’ve gone on record as saying that the HTC One X is the single greatest smartphone I’ve ever used. However, even I have to admit that the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S3 (or Samsung Galaxy S III, depending on what mood you’re in) is right up there, as well, and is arguably as good as my HTC (although subjectively, I still prefer the One X, ‘cos of the Sense UI).

However, according to BriefMobile, it seems that LG might be on course to release a superphone of their own. That’s allegedly it, over there in the pic, and it’s purported to be called the LG LS970.

It’s also said to potentially be even more powerful than the HTC and the Samsung… (more…)

LG distancing itself from Windows Phone, focusing on Android

Hmm, well, I wondered how long it’d take for this to happen, after the close partnership betwixt Nokia and Microsoft was announced, although this latest bit of news has nothing officially to do with that partnership. Unofficially, though, I’d be lying if I said my brain wasn’t going, “Microsoft are working heavily with Nokia, and I bet other manufacturers’ll work with them less, because of that.”

Y’see, LG are distancing themselves from the Windows Phone platform, and according to The Korea Herald, the official reason is because sales of Windows Phone devices have been weak. Or, as LG themselves put it, “The total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure…” (more…)

The see-through future of LG phones spotted in Iron Man 2

It’s a well-known fact that I was a huge fan of the first Iron Man movie; it was pure class from start to finish, and Robert Downey Jr. was a pretty much note perfect Tony Stark. So, you can take it as read that I was damnably excited when Iron Man 2 came out; so excited, in fact, that I completely forgot to go see it at the cinema, and only now, tonight, got round to seeing it on DVD.

And yes, it has phones in it. Although let’s be honest, it would, ‘cos it’s sponsored by LG, just like the first film was. Brilliantly, though, it’s not just a case of Tony Stark using an LG Prada 3.0; they’ve actually put some thought into what future phones might be like. Well, there’s a see-through phone in the movie, anyway… (more…)

LG is apparently targeting Samsung with its new smartphone as a rumoured LG handset is set to take on the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S3.

Codenamed the LG D1L the device is rumoured to be the company’s first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone with reported specs including a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 1.5GHz processor, a 4.7 inch HD display, which is slightly larger than what the Galaxy S3 is expected to have.

The LG D1L is said to arrive at the end of May which is before any rumoured release dates of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Android takes the lead in US phone market

ComScore has released its regular report on mobile phones market in the US.

The Report shows a number of smartphones crossed the 100 million mark for the first time but there was no position shuffling in the top 5 phone makers.

Samsung remains at the top taking a quarter of the shares with LG, Motorola, Apple and RIM following behind. Apple was the only manufacturer to see a 2% point growth, RIM stayed the same while other manufactures saw a loss.

In terms of operating systems Android has nearly 50% of the market and has also grown the most. Apple’s iOS has also grown but Microsoft’s operating system has fallen from 5.4% to 4.4% despite the recent release of high-end Nokia smartphones running on Windows Phone.

Ooh, look – Boot 2 Gecko shown off, in the flesh

Right then, Boot2Gecko, Mozilla’s new mobile OS, can best be summed up thusly: the internet isn’t on your phone, the internet is your phone. It’s such a new idea for a phone OS that I’m dying to see this beastie in the flesh, and now, during the Mobile World Congress, we can seen it…

Hmm, as it turns out, it’s very similar to every other major phone OS out there, ain’t it? Mind you, that ain’t a bad thing, really, ‘cos people expect certain things in their user experience, and Boot 2 Gecko looks like it delivers, even in this obviously unfinished state. Oh, and also, we now know who Mozilla’s partners are in this little endeavour… (more…)

Rumour – LG to unveil a phone running on Mozilla’s Boot2Gecko?

Now then, it’s not long until we get to see Mozilla’s brand new phone OS, Boot2Gecko, in the flesh. It’s all set to make its official debut at the Mobile World Congress next week, and if you remember from the last post I did about it, Mozilla are teasing that they have partners onboard already, one of whom is doing some heavy duty customisation of the OS. You may also remember that I threw a couple of names out, as people who might be likely to get involved with the new OS (I went with the safe bet of “HTC and Samsung“, as I usually do).

According to ExtremeTech, we may well know who one of the manufacturers involved with Mozilla is, and if they’re right, it’s one I didn’t mention in the last post, namely LG…  (more…)
