Charging your phone and headset… IN THE FUTURE!

Iqua 603 SUN

I was impressed, when I saw it, by the launch of the Iqua 603 SUN, the world’s first solar-powered Bluetooth headset. It’s a novel idea, and hey, no need to worry about charging it, as the sun does that for you (presumably unless it’s slinging it down or, like, night-time…)Now, that was back in November, but it seeded an idea in my head. What new charging solutions might we see in the future? What ways might we charge our phones and headsets, so we’re not relying on fossil fuels?

That’s a serious question, I thought. This is something that calls for some serious ideas, and no joking round.

So, first up, in this totally serious and not at all joking post:

The Sony Ericsson W910i Solar

Well, since we had a solar-powered headset, a solar powered phone seemed the next logical step. With a huge photovoltaic cell on the back, it’s perfect to catch the rays while you’re on the phone. Unless, of course, it’s slinging it down. Or night.

The Wind Up Nokia 6300

So, if solar power isn’t going to be the way to go, how about this for an emergency? You need never worry about your battery running out again, because all it takes is a few turns on the built in winding handle, and your phone’s good to go again!

The 2-Stroke Samsung G800

Hey, if you’re doing away with the battery, why not go the whole hog and supercharge your phone: give it a 2-stroke chainsaw engine! You’re not going to help the environment, but hey, it makes a sweet noise, and you get the satisfaction of that pull-string starter motor. All men love that. It’s genetics.

Shaky, jiggly, wiggly charging of your headset

Well, since phones are going all shaky (see the W910i), why not a headset that you can charge by shaking it? Fabulous! No worries about finding a plug socket, or whether the sun’s out. You just wang your head about to charge it.

Only downside, though, people will think you’re having a seizure.

So, now we come to the big denouement; the big cheese, the future of phones… I give you…

The Ultimate Eco-Phone!

Super Eco Phone

Think about it, no need to plug it into the wall, so you’re not reliant on fossil fuels. It’s sustainable (hamster food, and if the worst happens, a new hamster).

And it has a ZERO carbon footprint!

Well, except for the hamster poo…

[And a big thanks to Gary, who sits next to me, for the images in this story. Except the hamster one. That’s mine…]
