Will the Sony Ericsson CS8 REALLY be powered by Android?

Sony Ericsson CS8 to be powered by Android? An intriguing rumour’s popped up on GSMArena, today, listing a whole bunch of handsets that are due to hit T-Mobile America in the not too distant future. But there’s one phone in particular that’s doubly intriguing, because rumour has it that it’ll be Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone, and a Cyber-Shot phone, to boot.

However… in all the excitement, maybe it’d be a good idea to take a step back, and see if that rumour is in fact true, or whether, as I suspect, it’s all a big fuss over nothing.

Y’see, there’s a reason for me not getting excited, and it’s simple; I don’t reckon that is Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone. I reckon everyone’s grabbed the wrong end of the stick, and started to beat about the bush with it. What I reckon’d be more logical is if the Sony Ericsson CS8 is simply a renamed Sony Ericsson C905, destined for the colonies.

Let’s look at the evidence, starting with the release date. June 24th. If they’ve been patiently beavering away at an Android phone, to hit that June release date, then they’ve done a very good job of not letting any leaks out. Especially considering this is Sony Ericsson, who’ve had some monumental leaks in the past. Plus, we have the CEO’s statement that they’re still getting to grips with Android, so June sounds a bit soon for them to have finished it.

Secondly, there’s the camera, that’s rumoured to be 8 megapixels, and the fact that there’s talk of the CS8 having a 240×320 resolution screen, which, er, isn’t the resolution Android runs at… but those are the specs for the C905…

And finally, and this may sound a bit weird, and a bit “nah, that’s not the reason”, but Sony Ericsson never release phones first in America. The Sony Ericsson X1, we got it first… the Sony Ericsson Idou, we’d better get it first… the CS8? Ten quid says it’s just the C905 with a different badge on.

Of course, if I’m wrong, then I’ll be happy, too, because it means we’ll have seen their first Android phone. This is what’s known as a win-win situation!
