When Worlds Collide: Phones and ‘Toons…

(Warning: This blog story is utterly inane, and will not benefit you in any way. Hopefully it’s funny, though, since we all need a laugh on a Monday morning!)

It’s one of those questions you come up with on a Friday, isn’t it…? As your brain winds down to the weekend, it starts coming out with all sorts of weirdness, and this week, it posed the immortal question:

What cartoon characters would phones be if they were actually cartoon characters?
(Yes it even said it like that in my mind’s ear… But then, you already KNOW I’m long-winded!!)

Join me as I look at 10 phones, and the cartoon character that most embodies them. And bear in mind, this article is daft. I know it’s daft. You know it’s daft. Daft is gooooood.

1. The Nokia 5210

It’s a phone that was hard as nails, but by today’s standards, it’s prehistoric. Plus, it was strong enough to brain a mammoth… There’s only 1 cartoon character that fits the bill…

The Nokia 5210 is:

2. The Sony Ericsson W950i

It’s a Walkman phone. And I’m a Transformers fan. This is well documented. And in the rich heritage of Transformers (rich before Michael Bay got his hands on it, anyway) there was indeed a Transformer that turned into a Walkman (although, to be fair, the phone can’t shoot mini-cassette robots out of its chest…)

The Sony Ericsson W950i is:

3. The Nokia 7500 Prism

When this phone came out, everybody was surprised by the look of it. We’d not seen a phone like it, with its individual styling, triangular facets gleaming in the light. In fact it looked vaguely holographic. And with the changeable surrounds on the phone, you could make it pink, too.

The Nokia 7500 Prism is:

7500 prism jemJem!

4. The LG Chocolate White

No, not the Milky Bar kid for this one (I could just sense you thinking that!), that’d be FAR too easy. When the LG Chocolate White came out, various excited phrases were bandied out: the greatest, fantastic, ace, amazing, magnific, terrific… Come on, surely you can see where I’m going with this…

The LG Chocolate White is:

choc white dangermouseDangermouse!

5. The Nokia N95

Packed to the gills with gadgets, the N95 is the handheld multimedia computer par excellence. And it has lots of gadgets… Hmmm, gadgets…

The Nokia N95 is:

6. The Samsung E530

It’s like a normal phone, except Samsung made it for the ladies. And what differentiates boys from girls? Making something pink. Obviously. I swear some things haven’t changed since 1986. (Warning: yes, it’s another Transformer, that they made female, by, erm, making it pink.)

The Samsung E530 is:

e530 arceeArcee!

7. The Motorola V300

With the new V-series phones, Motorola did the first batch in 3 flavours: top-end V600, mid-range V500, and completely pointless, entry level V300, that was essentially the same as the bigger one, but not as good. This immediately brought a certain 80’s cartoon sidekick to mind, who was just like his dad, only small and rubbish.

The Motorola V300 is:

v300 godzookyGodzooky!

8. The Sagem MyX-7

(Technical Markus would like it to be known he seems to have turned into James May to write number 8 on the list…)

Sagem had a reputation for making cheap phones, that were packed with surprisingly nice features, and were surprisingly advanced. In fact, they only had one thing going against them, in that they were a bit, well, French…

The Sagem MyX-7 is:

myx7 tin tinTin Tin!

9. The Panasonic G50

This phone was absolutely tiny. And they did a red one. But it wasn’t very good. And it was annoying to use. So, what cartoon character was small, red, and made you want to stamp on it…?

The Panasonic G50 is:

g50 snarfSnarf, out Thundercats!

10. The Alcatel OT Easy DB

I had one of these phones, or at least, my sister did. And it was hateful. An evil, vile abomination. Combine that with the fact it’s older than the dawn of time. There can be only one character fit to be associated with the Alcatel…

The Alcatel OT Easy DB is:

easy db satanSatan!

Agree with my choices? Disagree? Made any links between phones and cartoon characters yourself? Think I need to get out more?

    haha Great post!

I’d love to find a cartoon character for the iPhone. Anyone got any ideas as to who it could be?

Before the arrival of the the K750i all sony ericssons before it were out classed by other manufacturers. Much like all american hero’s could be out classed by other countries, that is before the arrival of……………………CHUCK NORRIS!!!!!
Therefore the K750i is the Chuck Norris of the phone world.
