A story’s popped up on Gizmodo over the weekend about New York artist, Rob Pettit. And how does this relate to mobile phones? Well, the dude’s setting up and art show, using 5,000 of the blighters, that’s what.
Having patiently collected 5,000 mobile phones, he’s setting up an entire art show dedicated to them, highlighting, he says, “the proliferation and waste of cell phones”. And I know what you’re all thinking, you’re expecting me to complain about it, and go off on a rant about it.
But I’m confounding your expectations, because I’m not going to… fair play, that’s 5,000 phones that would get minced up, or incinerated anyway, so if they’re not doing anything, you might as well do something with ‘em.
And… then… it’s… I’m… erm…
No, it’s no good, I can’t do it.
How is taking 5,000 phones and putting them down in a spiral, ‘art’? Is this from the same school that thinks cutting a cow in half or showing everyone your manky bed sheets is a valid art form? And on top of that, with projects in motion to send phones to developing countries, how is using them like this (then probably sending them of to get incinerated, anyway) a good way to highlight the waste of mobile phones? What, by wasting them?!
And anyway, they make my eyes go all trippy in a spiral, like that…
I’ll end on a quote from Oscar Wilde, just in case anyone jumps to the defence of this artwork. As he said, “All art is quite useless.”
Agree with Technical Markus that wasting mobile phones to highlight the waste of mobile phones is hypocritical? Or are you a budding Brian Sewell, and think this is the art of the future? Either way, leave us a comment and have your say!

LOL, this is first of its kind. I hope this trend of mobile art catches up, will surely boost mobile sales

what makes it ‘art’, is that you didn’t come up with it first!
