Watch-phone bonanza – not one but TWO watch phones go on sale

Cool G108 and Van Der Led WM2 watch mobile phonesWell, change of plan, today… I was going to do a story about the newly-revealed TAG Heuer phone, that you can see here. But then I saw the pics of it, and realised it’s irredeemably ugly. Oh, and it costs upwards of 2,700 quid. So, I thought I’d do a different story… except that it’s still about the conjoining (my new favourite word) of mobile phones and watches. Yep, it’s that old favourite, the watch phone, guaranteed to being 007-shaped tears of joy to the eyes of men all round the world.

Except it’s not ONE mobile phone, it’s TWO, made by two different companies. And they’re both very different. As in one’s straight out of sci-fi and one’s clearly from the world of death metal…

First up is the not-very-aptly named Cool G108. Which is awesome because, look, it’s a flip phone! Now, if they make that flip spring-loaded, you’ve got yourself the makings of a Star Trek-style communicator, there. Just as long as you can make it go biddlydeep, like in Trek, then I’ll be happy. Mind you, it has one big downside (big being the operative word), since it looks like it’s roughly the same size as Saturn.

However, there’s hope in sight, with the Van Der Led WM2, the first watch mobile phone that looks like it is a necessary purchase. And do you know why? Keypad on the strap. Look! That’s really rather clever, that.

Oh, and the shiny blackness, and keys where metal studs should be, does give it a certain death metal piquancy, as Engadget Mobile pointed out. Not that it’ll last 5 minutes in some of the mosh pits I’ve seen, though. But hey, it might last long to mesmerise death metal groupies. A bolt through your nose is a safer bet, though…

So there you go. You wait years for one, then two watch mobile phones turn up within 24 hours of each other. And can I afford them?

Well, no, obviously not, which is why I’m stuck wearing my old Kronoform Transforming Robot Watch…

Share your opinion on wristwatch phones with the world! Bonus respect to people who can remember Kronoform Robot Watches!
