New mobile broadband technology is being put to the test by Vodafone, it has emerged.

The network announced this week that it has begun trials for a service that could see its customers enjoying download rates of up to 16 Mbps – with initial reports suggesting the tests have been a success.

Using high-speed data connection services on Vodafone‘s Spanish systems, the company plans to move on from this by starting a trial that offers peak rates of up to 21 Mbps using HSPA+ MIMO technology.

Andy MacLeod, global networks director for the carrier, said: "The results show that HSPA+ technology is well placed to further enhance our customers’ mobile broadband experience through the evolution of our existing 3G networks."

Current mobile broadband speeds on offer to Vodafone customers run at 7.2 Mbps.

Last month, Vodafone announced the launch of a new prepay modem that offered a fixed price on mobile broadband and data services.

Are you happy with your mobile broadband? Or would you pay extra for faster speeds?
