Consumers in areas with poor mobile coverage may benefit from a new Vodafone gadget called Sure Signal, which was recently described as "impressive".

Stuff magazine reviewed the device, which is a femtocell "packaged [...] up for domestic consumption" and said it represented good overall value, despite being compatible only with Vodafone handsets.

Setting Sure Signal up is easy, as it is simply plugged into the household’s broadband router, the publication said.

Working almost like a small mobile station, it picks up your phone’s signal, converts it into IP traffic and then sends it via the internet, but the call quality is just as good as normal, with no delay or glitches.

Stuff added: "The Sure Signal was unaffected by other network traffic such as downloading movies."

Currently, Vodafone is offering the gadget for £50 or on a monthly payment scheme of £5 per month.

It could be ideal for those with snazzy handsets, such as the Nokia N900, living in mobile signal blackspots.
