Ofcom has unveiled its top ten tips for those travelling abroad with mobile phones, noting that advanced preparation is essential.
The UK regulator advises checking the phone you have is able to be used in other countries and states that contacting your network provider to enable this may be required.
In addition, it is important to check the overseas call, text and data prices in advance and where necessary shop around to make sure you have the best deal.
It states that pan European tariffs are only applicable to voice calls and that bundle entitlements and voicemail charges may be different to when in the UK.
Using mobile phones for web applications when abroad can "cost significantly more than when using them at home" and the group advise those expecting to be abroad for a long period of time to consider buying a local SIM card.
Finally, it states reporting a lost or stolen handset is important as in some cases "you could be liable for the cost of the calls made in that country".
